HSG Update Part 3

My HSG has officially been scheduled for Monday at 9 am. I was told to sign into the outpatient services at the hospital at 8:45 and take some pain reliever beforehand.....and that's it.

So! I come to you ladies for advice. I know many of you have had an HSG before, so would you suggest anything? Comfy pants? Should Keeagn drive me? I already decided to take the day off work because we have to have yet another dishwasher delivered (long story,) so I don't need to worry about going to work afterwards. Do I need to have anything special at home? A heating pad?

I know many women report period-like cramps, but any other information and stories would be extremely helpful.

Also, I made an Facebook page for my blog! I figured it'll be a way to give quick updates and eventually, when I do get pregnant, a place to spam my happy pregnant self without worrying if I'm hurting another friend who's silently suffering with infertility on my regular profile. Friends can "like" and "unlike" my page if they're not comfortable following me through the current stage of my journey. If you'd like to learn more about when I'm ovulating and things like that, feel free to click the Facebook image to the right.

I hope everyone is having a good hump day! I'll be back later today with the June Blog Challenge Day 12.

  1. I know that this isn't much help at all, but my HSG was completely painless. I think they had me take an ibuprofen beforehand, but besides that, nothing else was needed. I hope your doc is super skilled and gentle!

    1. I hope s/he is too! The procedure is done through the radiologist department at the local hospital, so I don't know who the doctor will be. Thanks for the sweet thoughts!

  2. I TOTALLY psyched myself out with the HSG. i thought id be in the worst pain of my life or itd be as bad as the laparascomy i had. a lot of ladies on the weddingbee had horrible things to say and i was worried as ever. i did have isaiah drive me, wait and bring me home. but i probably could have driven myself home if i wanted too. i was told to take 3 ibuprofen before hand so that must have helped. i spent a few hours on the couch watching tv and then went to ikea that evening. i hope yours goes well, ill be thinking of you!!

  3. I had mine two days ago, and it was just like a pap smear. I took ibuprofen an hour before (4 pills) and other than that, I don't have any special instructions! They are "inside" for maybe 5 minutes and when they are it feels like menstrual cramps. My advice is to shoot the breeze with the doctor and keep your mind off of it ;) After, just make sure you have a pad or something, because as they say, what goes in (the dye), must come back out! You will have slight spotting too. Oh, and I got a prescription in case of infection... It will go great, just think of it as going in for a pap!

  4. I hope yours is quick and painless! Mine was tricky because my cervix was twisted, so getting the catheter in was pretty rough (same with my 1st IVF transfer...now that I've given birth, I don't have the same issues though!). Anyway, once the catheter was in, the procedure itself was slightly crampy, and I did have period-like cramps throughout the day, but nothing horrible. I actually think AF is way worse! I took ibuprofen beforehand and would have been totally fine driving myself home had my sister not been with me. Good luck!!

    1. I don't think I want to know how or why your cervix was twisted. That sounds horribly painful!

Thanks for the words of advice. It's nice to know that the procedure isn't as bad as so many have made it seem.

  5. Mine didn't hurt at all. (I actually preferred it to the dildo cam that I usually have to do!) I hope it's like that for you too!

  6. The HSG isn't too bad. It didn't hurt at all during it and I found it fascinating. I had cramping later in the day but it wasn't too bad. I would take some painkillers about half an hour before. Good luck.
